Wilton Historical Society Calendar

In
addition to tours of the Heritage
Museum, the Wilton Historical Society offers many interesting
activities during the year. After a quiet period over the summer, the Wilton
Historical Society is hard at work planning for an interesting number of
activities this fall. These will begin with the Exhibit "Wilton's Neighbor,
Mark Twain". The exhibit will be enriched with several programs about the
American
literary icon.

In this, the centennial year of Mark Twain’s death, The Wilton Historical Society
is pleased to present our fall exhibit: “Wilton's Neighbor, Mark Twain,” which
will be open from September 1 until October 31st. For this interesting and timely
exhibit we are collaborating with, and are indebted to, the Mark Twain Library
in Redding and the Mark Twain House in Hartford.

Youngsters
can step into the pages of a
cherished childhood book as they
transform into Tom Sawyer,
Becky Thatcher and Huckleberry
Finn, 1-3 PM. For the adults, a wine and cheese reception in the exhibit gallery begins at 3:30 p.m. The days activities will be accompanied by family friendly music from the ZuZazz String Orkestra,
performing a variety of jazz, swing, blues and tin Pan Alley tunes.

Some Interesting Connections Between the City of Norwalk & Mark Twain

The hour-long slide presentation describes two friendships developed by Mark Twain with Norwalk residents: Frederick Dimon, a shipping merchant, and Edward Keeler Lockwood, a leader in the mercantile industry, as well as a dramatic theft of valuables from Mark Twain’s Redding home during his residency.

Through this lecture provided by Craig Hotchkiss, Education Program Director of The Mark Twain House & Museum in Hartford, Connect, audiences explore how a ‘Missouri ruffian’ like Samuel Clemens who, as a consequence of his having resided in Connecticut’s capital city for twenty years, was transformed into the ‘Hartford luminary’ known as ‘Mark Twain.’

Focusing on the final two years of Mark Twain’s life, this program provides dramatic readings about his move to Redding, the tragic Christmas when his youngest daughter, Jean, with whom he had only recently reunited, dies suddenly on Christmas Eve. Also included are his failing health and his death, tributes by his friends after his death, and a selection of musical interludes.

Following the fun-filled April performances of "Jack and the Beanstalk", the No Strings Marionette Company returns, to perform the Charles Dickens’ classic, “ A
