Once the property of the Methodist church, the cemetery is now a separate, non-sectarian entity, but it maintains its simple, churchyard cemetery style. The setting is peaceful and private.
In 1997 Bald Hill Cemetery’s Executive Committee voted “to accept the offer of the Wilton Historical Society to provide assistance and support to The Bald Hill Cemetery Association, Inc. in the maintenance and preservation of the historic Bald Hill Cemetery. The Society is pleased to provide this support.
Veterans
Established in 1850 the Bald Hill Cemetery holds the graves of fifty-one veterans from seven United States conflicts, including the Civil War. Every Memorial Day a member of Wilton’s American Legion Post 86 honors our veterans by placing an American flag at each of their graves
History
From The Wilton Bulletin, October 13, 1939
“The North Wilton Methodist Episcopal Church, second oldest church structure in Wilton, is now for sale. The decision to dispose of the building, not the land it stands on, was reached at a meeting of the trustees of the Bald Hill Cemetery Association held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Olmstead on Friday evening, October 7.”
“The land on which the church stands was transferred by the trustees of the church to the Cemetery Association, with the consent of the Methodist Conference, a week ago. It will provide an entrance and parking space for the use of the cemetery.”
“Six months later when the church was dismantled, Mr. Olmstead, eighty-four years old and the oldest living parishioner at the time, remarked to a Bridgeport Post correspondent, “There are plenty of churches in the surrounding country and in these days of rapid travel it is not difficult to get to them. In the old days when the neighborhood was populated by small farmers, Bald Hill Church had its place in the community.”
Historic Site
Recognizing the importance of maintaining not only a working cemetery but also this historic site, A 170-year-old horse barn - once used by the minister and church members attending worship services - was recently restored.
Management
The Bald Hill Cemetery has always been managed entirely by volunteers, most of whom have family connections to the cemetery.
Perpetual Care Fund
The cost of maintaining our cemetery is covered by the income from our permanent, restricted, perpetual care fund. Over the years, prudent, conservative investments have protected the fund from market fluctuations.
Grave Sales
Graves are available for full burials or cremation remains. Please contact the Superintendent or Secretary for more information.
